About

Engineering vision, with measurable business impact.

I'm Matteo Stoppa, an engineering and innovation leader with a background spanning aerospace, applied research, hardware product development and technology entrepreneurship.

My career began in space-related biomedical engineering at Thales Alenia Space, where I helped deliver the first integrated wearable system for space. I then earned a PhD in aerospace medicine and wearable technologies at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and Politecnico di Torino, with research collaborations involving King's College London, MIT, ESA and Dainese.

Since then I have led multidisciplinary teams and managed R&D and product programs — taking complex hardware from concept through testing, certification, production and market. I've co-founded and run high-tech startups with two successful exits (including Sherlock, acquired by the Viasat Group).

As Chief Innovation Officer at COESA, I currently lead new product and service development, corporate growth strategy, digital transformation and innovation projects — combining technical vision with execution.

01SPARC PV recycling system
Clean Energy

SPARC

Compact, mobile, automated recycling of end-of-life PV panels — recovering aluminum, glass, copper and silicon.

Open

Photovoltaic technology is pivotal for clean energy, but it poses a significant waste-management challenge as panels reach end-of-life. Traditional recycling is costly and environmentally taxing: plants need large spaces, have low scalability and often exceed €2 million to set up.

SPARC introduces a transformative approach:

  • Compact — fits within a standard container.
  • Mobile — transportable by road and sea.
  • Automated — minimal manual operation.
  • Cost-efficient — lower operational costs, low maintenance.
  • Modular & self-sufficient — scalable, can run on rooftop solar.
  • Recovers aluminum, glass, copper and silicon while minimizing CO₂.

05Spinal Elongation Monitoring sensor
Space & Wearables

Spinal Elongation Monitoring

A skin-compliant piezo-resistive sensor measuring sub-millimeter spinal elongation in microgravity.

Open

Measuring spinal elongation in microgravity. The challenge was to design a sensor able to measure vertebrae displacement in weightlessness. A silicon piezo-resistive transducer compliant with skin elasticity was developed and connected to a custom read-out and wireless circuit attached directly to the subject's back.

PCB routing produced a compact, rounded (Ø 48 mm) and flat device — components soldered only on top — placed on an ECG electrode. It hosts the read-out, an ultra-low-power wireless module and the battery. It measures displacement < 1 mm, with material elongation up to 140% of nominal length.

06Load Monitoring system
Space & Wearables

Load Monitoring System

Turning ESA's Gravity Loading Countermeasure Skinsuit from passive to active — a wearable load monitor.

Open

Turning the Gravity Loading Countermeasure Skinsuit from a passive to an active space countermeasure. The proof of concept — a wearable adjustable load mechanism — adapts the +Gz force produced by the Skinsuit, with a sensitivity of 0.17 N and variation up to 20 N.

A wearable, wireless Load Monitoring system transmits data in real time to a custom GUI. Results spanned material (custom stretchable piezo-resistive material), electronics (quasi-digital read-out + short-range low-power comms) and implementation into the Skinsuit using conductive thread.

08Mate fall detector
IoT & Hardware

Mate

A waterproof bike fall detector smaller than a cork, alerting automatically via the rider's smartphone.

Open

Mate is a waterproof fall detector for bicycles, smaller than a cork. Thanks to an embedded algorithm it can tell whether a violent impact happened and communicate it automatically via the user's smartphone.

After Sherlock, we pushed for a simpler and smaller device — a different product, focused on cyclists' safety. Strict requirements asked for practical solutions, generated at the crossroad between electronics and industrial design.

09PVTEG hybrid module
Clean Energy

PVTEG

Hybrid solar modules: thermoelectric generators recover waste heat from PV panels via the Seebeck effect.

Open

Integrating Thermoelectric Generators (TEG) into photovoltaic panels increases the overall efficiency of solar systems by exploiting not only sunlight converted into electricity, but also heat normally dissipated during operation.

By applying TEGs to the rear side of the panels, part of the thermal gradient is recovered, producing additional energy through the Seebeck effect — improving energy density and thermal management, especially under high solar irradiance.

10COESA Home interface

11TESIMS wearable system
Space & Wearables

TESIMS

A wearable integrated sensor garment monitoring vital parameters to counteract microgravity effects.

Open

The space environment induces important changes in the human body. TESIMS is a wearable integrated sensor system monitoring biomedical parameters to measure and counteract the effects of long permanence in microgravity.

An integrated system of sensors distributed on normal clothing gives a continuous overview of health status. Vital parameters (temperature, pressure, pO₂, ECG, sEMG) enable a "threshold" philosophy with Caution and Warning alarms, while other sensors interface with Virtual Reality for training. The breadboard hosts accelerometers, gyroscopes, a miniaturized ECG (1×25×33 mm), microcontroller and wireless comms — a first step toward E-Inkjet-printed wearables for sports medicine and rehabilitation.
